Two videos on the Future of Business and Sustainability

Todays post is about two interesting videos I have come across today as a part of a new series on Sustainability by big think called: Balancing People, Planet and Profits: The Future of Business Sustainability.

Here are two I found particularly interesting of the four videos that have been published so far.

The Priorities of Our Planet’s Crisis from Gro Harlem Brundtland asking: Is the sustainability discussion focused too heavily on a low carbon economy?

The other video is:

The Key to Sustainability from Peter Brabeck. In the wake of the financial crisis, Peter Brabeck argues that creating shareholder value is simply not enough to promote a green future.

Video: What you need to find a job in CSR / Sustainability field

I have recently conducted my first interview for the Report section of the new 3bl TV web video channel.

This weeks interview was with Toby Young, a senior Recruiting consultant from Acre Resources, on how to get a job in the CSR / Sustainability field. Here Toby talks about his job at Acre Resources and what he believes is important for job seekers in the field to be just right for potential employers. He provides us with examples for graduates and senior managers. Lot’s of great information here.

This is the video. Please let me know what you think.

Video: Bill Gates on the future of energy

Today’s post is another post with a video as the main message. You might not be a huge Bill Gates fan but this is a really interesting talk he gave at TED2010 conference early this year. Here Bill Gates unveils his vision for the world’s energy future, describing the need for “miracles” to avoid planetary catastrophe and explaining why he’s backing a dramatically different type of nuclear reactor (Note: Nuclear is not my type of technology – for me renewable energy is the future and key to our energy problems).

His conclusion is: ‘Zero carbon emissions globally by 2050’. A very interesting message and worth spending 27 minutes of your time to listen what he has to say even if you do not agree with his conclusions.

Thanks belong to David Connor for pointing me to this interesting video.

Video: Enabling people to lead a better life – The example of ‘Dancing Bears’ in India

Today’s post is a video from TED about enabling individuals to lead a better life and the cruel practice of ‘Dancing Bears’ in India.

These two subjects seem to be very different from each other but once you will have watched the video below you will see that if you want to solve a problem such as the cruel practice of the ‘Dancing Bears’ in India you need to enable the person earning a living from this practice to lead a different life and not just penalizing them for animal cruelty.

Kartick Satyanarayan describes how he and his organization changed the lifes of bear handlers by giving them an opportunity and not a jail sentence.

Video: Fusion Is Energy’s Future – But Is It Really?

Today video is about the possibilities about nuclear power and its relevance for our sustainable future.

This is how the video is being described on TED.com:
“Physicist Steven Cowley is certain that nuclear fusion is the only truly sustainable solution to the fuel crisis. He explains why fusion will work — and details the projects that he and many others have devoted their lives to, working against the clock to create a new source of energy.”

I am personally not so sure about the use of nuclear power as the solution for all our energy problems but as with everything is it important to keep an open mind towards any tools that can help us moving towards a sustainable future in my opinion.

Video: Silencing the Climate Change Critics

Some of you might have heard of the so called “ClimateGate” email scandal where 13 years of private emails from leading climate scientists where stolen and disseminated.

The main story here was that in a very small proportion of those emails scientists expressed their doubts about whether Climate Change is actually happening and that some scientists actually manipulated data to fit their research.

This was grist for the mill of the Climate Change critics of course which immediately reinforced their message that Climate Change is the biggest hoax of the century.

More information on the whole development, etc. can be found here:

The Climatic Research Unit e-mail hacking incident and here Hacked climate change scientists receive death threats.

Bu isn’t it an interesting coincidence that we currently have the biggest and most important Climate Change summit in Copenhagen going on at the moment? It seems to me that this publication of emails was not deliberate at all but rather planned for a long time to influence of the outcome of the summit.

In any case. The science is clear and I do not believe anyone can honestly say from their personal experience that Climate Change is not happening.

This video here is one of the best answers to those Climate Change critics I have seen so far.

So come on dear critics, be critical of something else please. What about our political leadership, human right abuses by some countries or the lack of investment into education for a start. That criticism would actually help for a change.

Climate Change is happening and we need to find a way to stop and reverse it now. And that is a fact.

Video: Ancient techniques of harvesting our most precious resource – Water

I am aiming to post one interesting video each week. This weeks video is about the most precious resource of our planet. Water.

This is a fascinating video from TED.com on the ancient techniques of water harvesting. Maybe we should look into the past more often to find solutions to our current problems instead of aiming to find new ways continuously.

Enjoy.

Video: Killing fields – the true cost of Europe’s cheap meat

This is an old topic but we need some action to show that the price South American farmers are paying for our cheap meat we have here in Europe is horrendous. I guess we all know that this way of producing soya simply to feed our animals here in Europe is just not sustainable. But this is easily forgotten unfortunately.

This is not an activist video or something similar but a very professional fact driven film. The video is showing what the situation is, that this cycle of reinforcing problems needs to be broken and that there are alternatives to this practice.

We as consumers have a choice and we need to decide individually what we want to do. I have made my choice years ago but becoming a vegetarian. I still consume dairy products but only in a very limit amount (I love my cheese!).

But the choice is yours and I am only here to provide you with some thoughts and information to make an informed decision. But please take the time to watch this video.

Video: Controversial view on the problem of feeding the masses

This is another very interesting video from TED.com. This time on the issue of feeding the whole world and the history of bread. I am posting a lot more videos at the moment as I feel that the visual aspects of information sharing on my blog needs to pick up.

Enjoy!
