What is your favorite Social Media Channel for CSR / Sustainability topics in 2013?

Back in 2012 I did a poll asking you what your favorite social media channel was. The results where pretty clear with Twitter being by far the most popular channel.

Today I would to repeat this poll with the intention to see whether the results will change 12 months on. Has Google+ now become more popular or has the social media push by LinkedIn helped to convince more people that LinkedIn is the best social media channel? Or does Twitter still rule the pack?

So please take am moment and vote. The poll closes in 2 weeks and I will post the results a few days after that. Many thanks.

Poll: What is your favourite Social Media Channel for CSR / Sustainability topics?

I decided to conduct regular polls on interesting CSR / Sustainability topics during 2012. The plan is to do a new poll every 3 weeks going from Sunday to Friday that week.

This is this weeks poll:

Thank you for participating and I will publish an analysis of the results once the poll has closed here on my blog.

The current Social Media Network dilemma & advice

WIth the arrival of Google+ , Google’s answer to Facebook, the choice which Social Media Network to use just got more complicated (Link to the Google+ News)

With so much choice these days we are are clearly left with the dilemma which Social Media Network best fits our needs and wants. Here is what I am doing and would recommend for the time being.

Twittertwitter The current Social Media Network dilemma & advice

This is still my absolute favorite network to share information on. To me it seems that Twitter is also maturing at the moment. Most people I connect with on Twitter know what they are talking about and have been on Twitter for a while now (i.e. know what they want from this Network). This is a good sign for the quality conversations and interaction in my view.

My advice: Use Twitter as your number one Social Media Network. There is no better alternative out there at the moment.

Facebookfacebook logo The current Social Media Network dilemma & advice

I like Facebook and when I started to share more business related information a few months back, the feedback I got was and still is pretty mixed. For me the big question with Facebook is whether I am not annoying all other friends with this business information when they are expecting more of a personal note. Facebook is intended to be more personal after all.

My advice: Use Facebook mainly for personal connections. A way to differentiate networks is not really possible at the moment.

LinkedIn is a great site to host your online CV if you want to call it that. But I am not using it other then as an automatic outlet for my Twitter updates. LinkedIn in my view is the classic example of a great Social Network that is not being used enough from my side at the moment unfortunately.

My advice: Use LinkedIn on a limited basis at the moment. It is great for your personal CV, etc but not really for engaging a wider network of people you do not know so far.

Google+googleplus logo The current Social Media Network dilemma & advice

Google+ is the new player in town. I have managed to get in while it is still in the testing phase and must say that I really like it. It is much simpler and “cleaner” in comparison to Facebook. The idea I have once Google+ is open to everyone, is that I will use this Social Media Network as my second CSR / Sustainability information outlet next to Twitter and limit my Facebook updates to purely personal updates.

My advice: Signup with Google+ and start creating your professional so called “Circles”. I am sure Google+ will be successful. Once more people sign up, you will see that it is a Social Media Network which will enable you to share relevant information for the intended networks at a click of a button.

How to find the interesting and non-promotional CSR / Sustainability articles

One of my goals for 2011 when the New Year arrived was to be more critical of the things I am reading and listening to when it comes to CSR / Sustainability communications and literature. One thing in particular is really starting to annoy me more and more: Most articles on CSR / Sustainability nowadays are commercially driven and most of the time only serve one purpose and that is to sell the product or service of the author, website or business.

list How to find the interesting and non promotional CSR / Sustainability articlesFor me it therefore very important to spend my time wisely during the day to not read something that in the end turns out to be a promotion for a product/service or business in general.

So the question for me is: How do you sort out the interesting, ie. non-commercial and non self-promotional blogs/publications or tweets from the the general and overly commercial noise of the CSR / Sustainability world?

I would really be interested to hear from you about how you do this. This is what I do at the moment.

1) I only skim my Google Reader RSS feeds in order to find interesting articles. Going into detail while browsing is very time consuming and can disappoint you very soon.

2) I only follow the people on Twitter that I feel deliver the most interesting and non commercial information. I call it my best of the best list.

3) I DO NOT sign up for newsletters anymore. Period.

4) I only join the major social media sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. More social networks is my experience will only confuse you and make your life even harder in terms of finding an interesting CSR / Sustainability article / post.

5) I use a separate email address for anything where my email address is needed in order to get some further information. Never use your main email address otherwise you will never be left alone. That is my experience.

These are five things I am doing to try to limit my exposure to the commercial and self-promotional blogs/publications or tweets.

What do you do?

Using LinkedIn Answers to promote Sustainability

Todays post is a resource post about LinkedIn Answers and the potential to promote Sustainability.

I have only just started to use LinkedIn Answers but I think the potential for sharing knowledge by being a platform for asking questions on Sustainability and getting answers to them from professionals is really enormous.

So what is LinkedIn Answers about?

The biggest benefit from LinkedIn Answers really is that you can get fast, accurate answers from your network and other experts worldwide and that you are able to showcase your knowledge, expertise, and interests by answering questions.

This is the look and feel of the interface:

l answers1 Using LinkedIn Answers to promote Sustainability

This sharing of knowledge by question and answer is especially important in the context of Sustainability. Sharing the knowhow and information individuals have is essential to pool the best practice and innovation for our fight to save the planet and our way of living. Sounds important I know but we need to everything no matter how small it may seem to make an impact.

Next to connecting with likeminded people to share information and knowledge, the LinkedIn Answers platform can also serve as place for where we can answer Sustainability critics (if they will ask a question of course) that are doubting the usefulness of Sustainability. LinkedIn Answers is not the place for a full online discussion obviously but this might be a good information source for practitioners to point colleagues/critics to if they have a question about certain Sustainability topics.

You need to have registered with LinkedIn in order to answer questions but I believe everyone in the Sustainability business sector should have a a LinkedIn account and profile in any case.

One last note
Just to be clear on this. I am by no means affiliated with LinkedIn and I am not doing any business with them. For me it is important to share this information for the benefit of all and to promote Sustainability.

Building a Business Network Using the Web

Everyone that is doing business knows the importance of a business network. The web has given us even more possibilities to extend this business network. The biggest difference is that we can know connect with new business contacts from all across the globe with no limits. There is only one big problem. We do not know these people because we have never met face to face.
This post is about introducing you to three great places on the web where you could start building your network without the fear that you are giving away confidential information or that you are connecting to untrustworthy people and give them access to your network.

linkedin logo Building a Business Network Using the WebLinkedIn
LinkedIn is the classic and currently the largest online business networking website. Here are some tips on how to use LinkedIn to your advantage in one of my earlier posts.   LinkedIn is a must for everyone building an online business network.

ecademy Building a Business Network Using the Webecademy
Well ecademy claims to be better then LinkedIn. I have joined and tested it. I like the idea behind it that it “enables business people to connect through online networking, at networking events and 1-2-1 meetings” (Quote: ecademy website). But there is one big problem I think. What if LinkedIn also adds all the functions you have there? Well in any case this has not happened up until now so ecademy is worth a try in my opinion.

twitter Building a Business Network Using the WebTwitter
And then there is Twitter of course. Well what is Twitter? Bu they are very different so how can you compare Twitter with ecademy and LinkedIn? Here is what I think.
I think Twitter is a great business networking tool now will be a even more useful tool in the future. It is easy to use, you can start creating your network instantly, communication is instant and it is becoming more and more popular across the net. Here is a great post from Chris Brogan on how to use Twitter in a great way.  If you not already on Twitter and have access to the internet for a daily usage then Twitter can really make it a lot easier to build your business network.

And these are only three of a lot more business networking websites out there. In my opinion it has never been easier to build a business network using the web. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and work the Net.

How To Use LinkedIn To Build Your Business Network

linkedin How To Use LinkedIn To Build Your Business NetworkLinkedIn is the largest online networking site on the web and every person that is interested in building their professional network and growing their business can profit immensely from the usefulness of LinkedIn.

Why is that? Here are some stats for LinkedIn

  • Over 25 million professionals from over 150 different industries
  • One of the largest online recruitment and business development resources
  • 187 % 2008 year-over-year growth (2007-2008)
  • Over 9.5 million page views month-on-month (May 2008)

LinkedIn is definitely one of the places on the net where every serious business person needs to have a profile.

The key to successfully using LinkedIn is to be an active member and to try to connect to as many people as possible even if you have not previously met this person.

Here are some tips and tricks on how to use LinkedIn to build your business network:

  • Fill out all the fields with your previous work experience, network, qualifications, etc. The more you tell about yourself the better you will be found on searches.
  • Upload a picture. Obvious I know. But over 50% of all profiles on LinkedIn I have seen do not have a picture of the person. A picture provides another personal touch. Use a picture.
  • Always keep your profile updated. This is also important as the system rates continuous user activity as a positive when it comes to be found in searches.
  • Join various LinkedIn groups to connect to likeminded people and invite them to connect.
  • If you have the money and you really begin to see the business benefit then why not become a business or business plus member. This will enable you to get more features and help you to be ranked higher in searches.
  • But the link to your profile in your email signature. In this way friend, business contacts will be able to go directly to your LinkedIn profile.
  • Invite people to connect via LinkedIn by looking them up using your Yahoo, Hotmail or Outlook contacts.
  • Be open and honest about yourself when using LinkedIn. It might “only” be a page on the internet but be aware that this page will also be indexed by search engines and therefore come up in your name search.

All in all is LinkedIn a fantastic resource for building your professional network so if you do not already have a LinkedIn profile then you are missing a trick.

Hamburg For A Day And A Wedding After That

I am off to fly to Hamburg/Germany today. I have an important meeting there tomorrow morning. Please keep your fingers crossed for a positive outcome. This meeting is a significant influencing factor for my short and mid term business future. I will report back on Tuesday of next week on the outcome. So stay tuned.
After that meeting I am heading to Flensburg after I have met up with Anne to attend a friends wedding on Friday. This is our second wedding this month and there is one more to go after this one. I will post some pictures next week.
On the business front this week has been very successful and productive so far. So no complains there. I had a lot of interesting conversations with all sorts of people across the globe and I was able to spend some time on expanding my online networks on Xing and LinkedIn. But to be perfectly honest, I am looking forward to the time when everyone is back from their holidays. There is not much going on here in London.
I also published another blog post on SustainabilityBlog.org today on Sustainability and CSR communications is you are interested.

So keep your fingers crossed for tomorrow everyone.

All the best,
Fabian

Where is the summer?

sonne Where is the summer?Well here it is the summer. For a couple of hours on a Friday that is. So you think: “Oh No not something about the weather again.”
I hate to write about the weather all the time but what can you do when the weather is so bad that you wish you would be somewhere warmer and sunnier. Okay now lets stop moaning now Fabian.

This week has been fairly quiet. You can really tell that it is the holiday season. Even my wife works from home today. This hasn’t happened for months because she was always to busy.
Because there was not so much going on this week I focused on online networking with a special emphasis on LinkedIn and Xing. I really love these networking sites. They are so useful sites to connect to likeminded people and professionals in your field. LinkedIn is more a global professional network where Xing in my opinion is very “Germany” focused. But in any case would I recommend to anyone interested in making new business contacts to register with both or at least with one.

I am going to Germany next week to meet up with a potential business partner in Hamburg. I am leaving a day earlier then Anne to meet them. Anne is going to Hamburg as well because we have another wedding in a week’s time close to Flensburg. (link to Flensburg).

And it decision time after that meeting. I have to finalize my plans for the redevelopment of the forum. This might not sound like a big and important decision but this decision in which direction to take the forum will be a huge influencer in where the future of my family lies in my opinion.

This weekend will be a nice weekend hopefully. Anne and I are meeting friends on the Sunday to, if the weather permits, take a long walk in the southern London area. There are some nice places to walk and with a 5-7 hour walk this day should be fun and great ot get away from the computer for a day.

Until next time everyone.

Fabian
