Whenever I'm not sure of the extension of a domain name I enter the .com first. So I'd suggest this extension as I'm not the only one thinking like this. You can of course buy the .net and .org extensions too and have a permanent redirect to the .com address. This way you can make sure no one will clone your site in an attempt to steal your traffic.

I think ".net" extensions can be very useful for some organisations especially where they have the word network in the names e.g., the Science & Development Network -- which uses the domain "SciDev.Net". This is easy to remember as it is an abbreviation or acronym for their name, and in such cases is probably a better than the more popular ".com" or ".org".

Another popular trend seems to be the use of domains from small (and presumably undersubscribed) Pacific islands, such as ".fm", ".tv", ".nu" for special-purpose names, such as fm for radio, tv for video websites, etc.

I have also seen offers of "free domains" based on some of these, such as "co.cc" or "co.nr" -- these seem to be popular for people with hosted websites like blogs, on the basis that it is shorter or more attractive than the long subdomain names, as discussed here:
