Tackling the problem of eWaste within an organisation

ewaste Tackling the problem of eWaste within an organisationMore and more technology companies are being targeted by NGOs and other interest groups on their environmental protection and electronics recycling. The latest was Samsung targeted by the Electronics TakeBack Coalition.

Other companies like Sharp, Toshiba, Visio, and other TV have also been targeted in the recent months.

But where to start?

Here are some resources to start with:
For the US: ElectronicsRecycling.org
For the UK: Waste Online
Wikipedia on eWaste
How to recycle eWaste on eHow.com.

So what does that mean for the Corporate Responsibility representative in the company in practical terms?

  1. Make sure your company has an eWaste strategy
  2. Involve more people in raising the problem of eWaste
  3. Start with your eWaste in your office and set an example. How do you recycle in your department?
  4. Connect with other companies on that topic. Maybe you could get some new ideas and answers to some related topics.

  • It is a start to raise the topic within a company. It is where a lot of electronic devices pile up. But why not implementing a system that works in general?

I am from Switzerland and for me it's normal to bring electronic devices back to the retailer once it's broken. We have to pay a recycling fee when we buy electronic goods. This means that all retailers have to take back any electronic goods and give it for recycling.

But is this enough? Would people TRUELY UNDERSTAND the complexity of electronics, it's agglomeration of valuable materials and that it makes sense to recycle it? Engineers put so much effort into creating these devices! What a waste to just dump or burn it!
Why not making art out of it? Or at least fire your creativity with it and get in touch with the materia(l). That's why I created Bricolo Box.
